Evening Support Worker
15.50 hours per week

£7.55 - £8.00 per hour

Gaston and Dolphin is home to people with a learning disability and other sensory needs. We have a great team of staff who are passionate about their work and ensure that everyone has personalised, quality support.  We are seeking a new member of the team. You must be a good listener and communicator, able to support each person both in their home and in their wider community. You will be included in all aspects of their lives through proper and regular community and domestic participation. You must be able to work within the team as well as Lone Working and be an active, contributory member; using your own initiative to drive the service forward. The role requires applicants to be able to work on a shift pattern which may include sleep in duties.

Ideally you will have experience supporting people with learning disabilities or other care services. Qualifications and experience are desirable but we believe the right attitude and approach are essential and training will be provided.

Support Worker Responsibilities

The post holder has a responsibility to the designated Team Manager and Senior Support Worker

Supervision

The post holder will be supervised by the designated Team Manager and also through on the job coaching from Senior Support Workers

Purpose of the Job

To work within the Hft Statement of Purpose, values and policy guidelines to assist in the creation of an environment in which all people we support receive the highest possible standards of accommodation and support. This will be done in consultation with individuals to develop their potential and sustain their rights.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. To carry out key working duties, to offer opportunity of experiences and promote equality for people we support

2. To complete, file and communicate relevant and accurate records

3. To maintain the confidentiality of information

4. To provide and assist the individuals in all aspects of personal care needs as required by their condition, culture and wishes, with sensitivity, respect and dignity

5. To contribute to the PCP (Person Centred Plan) process for and with the people we support

6. To promote the well being and general health of people we support and help create surroundings in which the service user feels secure

7. To participate in medicine administration and recording

8. To speak on behalf of people we support, put forward professional views and present a written report at Annual Contract Reviews

9. To aid the assessment, selection and preparation of people we support for placement to and closure of placement from the scheme

10. Where appropriate to assist and support the involvement and contact of parents, relatives and friends of the people we support

11. To contribute to the individual and general development of people we support

12. To take on certain management functions of individuals finances within the schemes. This includes assisting individual people we support in managing daily personal finances (e.g. purchasing clothes, presents)

13. To purchase materials for day service activities, using the Service’s finances, whilst fulfilling relevant requirements regarding cash handling and submission of receipts

14. To encourage and support the personal, social, occupational and leisure development through the scheme and community

15. To help in the management of complex or sensitive issues, e.g. challenging behaviour, personal relationships. Where necessary, by offering support, advice and encouragement to people we support

16. To know and work within relevant legislation, e.g. Health and Safety at Work Act

17. To undertake sleep-ins or when on waking nights, to remain awake throughout the night to support individuals

18. When required, to escort individuals including accompanying them on holiday

19. To prepare for and participate in the coaching and supervision process within Hft

20. To participate in annual appraisals and identify personal training needs

21. To start, reply and maintain contact with other professionals or agencies

22. To drive Hft vehicles to an agreed standard

23. To help in maintaining a hygienic and healthy environment, including carrying out household cleaning duties

24. To carry out appropriate general administrative duties

25. To undertake such other duties as appropriate to your responsibilities, grade and ability

26. To adhere to Hft’s health and safety policies, standards and guidelines at all times

 

What you need to be a Support Worker

 Must Have’s:

  • an outgoing personality
  • a flexible approach to meet the individual needs of people we support
  • to be able to support individuals with personal care needs
  • an ability to undertake day to day household tasks and enable individuals to be involved through different levels of support
  • be patient and sensitive to the needs of everyone.
  • a quality to value and respect all individuals.
  • an ability to communicate and listen to the people we support and team members. Also with in partnership families/carers other professionals.
  • an ability to work alone and within a team
  • ability to self-reflect and have the confidence to raise concerns
  • understanding of confidentiality within the work place.
  • an ability to communicate using different methods to accurately record information
  • an ability to remain calm in a variety of circumstances and to know when to seek assistance
  • an ability to work flexibly, including weekends and evenings
  • an ability to undertake sleep-in duties or waking night duties.
  • to be able to support people whilst on their holidays
  • to take part in personal development and training as and when required, which may include overnight stays.
  • an ability to work within the aims, objectives, policies and practices of Hft


Nice to Have’s:

 

  • experience of working in the care field
  • an understanding of health and safety and hygiene issues in the home
  • an NVQ Level 2 in Care or diploma level 2 or above
  • a full driving licence
  • understanding of Human rights, equal opportunities
