Job Description

TERMS OF REFERENCE AND JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: RELIEF WORKER

RESPONSIBILITY TO: Asst Services Manager, Unit /Team /Community Manager or Senior Support Worker

SUPERVISION: Personal or group supervision fromAssistant Services Manager, Unit /Team /Community Manager or Senior Support Worker

PURPOSE OF JOB: Within the Hft Vision, Mission and values, Policy Guidelines to assist in the creation of an environment in which all individuals with learning disabilities receive the highest possible standards of accommodation and support. Provide temporary cover for periods of staff absences

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES to be carried out within the appropriate statutory, Hft and local guidelines:

Support for Individuals

  • To offer support to a service on a temporary basis to cover staff shortages
  • To offer the highest levels of support to individuals with learning disabilities at all times
  • To promote the well being and general health of individuals and help create surroundings in which individuals with learning disabilities feel secure
  • To contribute to the individual in his/her general development
  • To encourage and support the personal, social, occupational and leisure development through the service and community
  • To provide emotional and practical support for individuals for everyday issues, and when faced with difficult decisions or experiences
  • To assist individuals with all aspects of their financial management as required, paying bills, benefit claims, purchasing clothes, presents etc
  • To support individuals with household work
  • Where required, to prompt or assist individuals in aspects of personal care with sensitivity, respect and dignity, as required by their condition, culture and wishes
  • When required, to undertake sleep-in duties or waking night duties on the premises
  • Accompany individuals on holiday

Communication

  • To understand the principals and systems of communication between individuals and their parents, relatives and friends
  • To start, reply and maintain contact with other professionals or agencies

Administration

  • To complete all records required
  • To know and work within relevant legislation, e.g. Health and Safety at Work Act
  • To prepare for and participate in the coaching and supervision process within Hft
  • To carry out appropriate general administrative duties

Generally

  • To have a duty to adhere to Hft’s health and safety policies, standards and guidelines at all times
  • To maintain the confidentiality of all information about individuals Hft business
  • To undertake such other duties as appropriate to your responsibilities, grade and ability

This job description will be reviewed annually

Person Specification

Must Have’s:

  • a good standard of written and spoken English
  • the ability to maintain records accurately
  • the ability to communicate effectively
  • numerical skills – in order to keep records and provide advice to people about their money
  • basic IT skills
  • the ability to support people in a respectful way and in line with Hft’s values
  • the ability to work on your own and as part of a team
  • self-motivation
  • patience, reliability and trustworthiness
  • an understanding of health and safety and hygiene issues in the home

Nice to Have’s:

  • an NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care
  • an ability to do household tasks
  • ability to drive
