Supporting People with Learning Disabilities

Projects

HFT must fundraise to be able to provide new buildings and services, and to adapt our existing buildings to meet people's changing needs.

We are currently working on a range of projects.  For example, our Person Centred Technology project - We have found that it can be difficult for some people with learning disabilities to do the ordinary, everyday tasks that most of us take for granted and therefore be able to live independently. We know that we can solve some of these problems by using technology or ‘gadgets’ to help people feel safe and enjoy a more fulfilling way of life, without always requiring a member of staff to be with them.

HFT wants to extend this project across the country and needs funding for a member of staff to find out which gadgets can help each person, to install and monitor them and to evaluate the benefits. We also need a fund of £20,000 to buy the equipment. Most of it is inexpensive and simple to use and we estimate this figure would benefit at least 50 people across the country in one year.

Another project needing support is our Family Carer Support Service (FCSS)

HFT’s FCSS provides support, advice and guidance for families who have a relative with a learning disability. It provides independent and up-to-date information to help families make decisions so their relatives lead fuller, inclusive and ultimately more independent lives. Last year over 2000 families benefited from the FCSS.

The FCSS is funded entirely from charitable income. This year HFT has raised £74,000 towards it ( which is approximately three quarters of the full requirement). A donation of £20,000 would fund four series of workshops and two editions of the New Digests. The workshops would be attended by approximately 100 families during the year and the News Digests mailed to1750 families.
