HFT has been using Assistive Technology innovatively on a large scale for over 3 years, winning funding in 2004 from the European Social Fund to lead the TATE Project (Through Assistive Technology to Employment) www.tateproject.org.uk
The aim of TATE was to research and develop the use of Assistive Technology with people with learning disabilities. It enabled us to work with manufacturers and people with learning disabilities to trial a very wide range of different equipment - mostly existing technologies that were predominantly being used by the elderly and people with physical disabilities. The TATE Project ended in March 2008 and we continue to implement Assistive Technology across HFT.
We have now developed a needs-led assessment process for introducing people to technology, with an initial referral of an individual, through to reviewing their progress after the installation of the technology. This process ensures that the technology installed meets the individual’s needs. You can download the process below.
As part of the assessment we visit the person to establish any barriers to independence, as well as talking to their support teams and families. This allows us to create a “personalised toolkit of technology” to support them - hence the term “Person Centred Technology”.
HFT recognise the potential that assistive technology can bring to people and we continue to develop our knowledge and experience in this field. For more information please contact Emma.Nichols@hft.org.uk or call her on Tel: 0117 9061700.
