HFT helps people with learning disabilities to speak for themselves.
One of our Values is our belief in Empowerment and we aim to help people to develop their potential, to make informed choices and to take responsibility.
Advocacy is all about Empowerment, supporting people to speak out, to be heard and to make choices and decisions about their lives. It's about the person with a learning disability being in control.
Advocates are independent and they work with and for people with learning disabilities. They listen and help people to make decisions but don't impose their own views. Having an advocate can build an individual's confidence, help them gain skills and become more independent.
We offer individual advocacy support, support to people at meetings like 'Speak Up' where people are encouraged to talk about their lives and things that are important to them and support to people on Partnership Boards who want to change services.
We are also part of the national Advocacy Alliance.
HFT has commissioned a booklet entitled 'The Best of Both Voices', aimed at advocates and others working with people with learning disabilities. The booklet contains a series of tools to help advocates ensure that the voice of the person with learning disabilities they are advocating for is heard. It is the first such publication in this country '“ and will be especially useful with implementation of the Mental Capacity Act.
Published by Helen Sanderson Associates in collaboration with HFT, the booklet is available in hard copy from Inclusion Distribution at a price of £4.50 www.inclusiononline.co.uk Tel: 01625 269 243, on can be downloaded opposite.
