Supporting People with Learning Disabilities

Workshops

We are funded to run several courses of workshops every year. We are also commissioned to design and deliver others. Attendance is free of charge to carers.

Our workshops help families get the support and services they need. We supply national and local information '“ including how to influence developments. Participants share knowledge, skills and mutual support.

After talking about recent government ideas and laws affecting people with learning disabilities and their families, the group then choose further topics that might include:

  • Carers rights and issues
  • Health issues
  • Preparing for the future
  • Person centred approaches
  • Money matters (benefits, charging, wills, trusts, individual budgets and direct payments)
  • Housing and support options
  • Fulfilling lives (relationships, meaningful activities)

These are at least four 4½ hour meetings (which include lunch).

Generally our workshops will be relevant whatever the age of your relative with learning disability, but we also run courses specially designed to suit particular groups '“ such as those preparing for transition into adulthood or older family carers.

Recently we have run workshops in Dudley, Swindon, Ashford and for Bristol's Asian community.  Some messages from our diversity work are included in the Valuing People Support Team Ethnicity Newsletter, Winter 2007. If you would like a workshop course near you please contact us!
