The Family Carer Support Service

The Family Carer Support Service produces two family carer news digests a year, these include information about Government Policy and carers issues.  Plus other family focused material.

Holiday Information

Each year HFT's Family Carer Support Service produces a free, updated Holiday Information guide, with 6 sections: Before you Book, General Guides and Services, Places to stay, Special Interest holidays, Benefits & Financial Help and Insurance.  Under Disability Discrimination legislation people with learning disabilities should have access to the same range of holidays as everyone else. However, it can still be helpful to know of holiday opportunities that people with learning disabilities and their families have already used.

Getting In Control

Made with families in mind by HFT's Family Carer Support Service, this DVD explains the differences between the present social care system and that of using an Individual Budget.  It also explains, through families experiences: Options for money, the practicalities of planning support, ongoing responsibilities, views of the future and other related issues.

The DVD costs £12 a copy including postage and packing.  You can order a copy by contacting 0117 930 2608, emailing naomi.shannon@hft.org.uk or downloading the order form and sending a cheque payable to HFT to FCSS, HFT, Merchants House, Wapping Road, Bristol, BS1 4RW.

The NFCN, of which we are a member, have produced various information sheets: Self Directed Support; Direct payments, individual budgets and In Control; Making decisions: An Introduction to the Mental Capacity Act; When Things Go Wrong; Circles of Support and Getting Help and Support in your Caring Role.  You can download them from www.familycarers.org.uk or if you would like hard copies contact Naomi Shannon on 0117 9302608 or email naomi.shannon@hft.org.uk

Valuing People Valuing Families: towards an agenda for social inclusion
Following a multi-agency seminar in 2001 HFT produced this comprehensive report on the role, needs and strengths of families of people with learning disabilities in the UK. It analyses the range of issues and has many practical solutions that we are very keen to share with others.
