Supporting people with learning disabilities in Leeds

Individual people, individual choices, individual lives

HFT have been in Leeds since 1987 and whilst we seem to have been here a long time we have continued to improve and individualize our services.  We now provide more than ever a variety of diverse, flexible, creative support packages to adults with learning disabilities, in any environment at any time and for any period. 

At the moment we work in Whinmoor, Crossgates, Garforth and Rothwell areas, although we are available to work with other people in other parts of the city. 

We do believe individual service design is paramount and this is underpinned by individual person centered planning, this is where we put the people that we support in the position to say what they want and how they want it. From this we draw up packages of staff support which can range from a few hours per week to services that provide 24 hour period. We work with individuals to support them in their own homes in tenancies, provide help in finding and keeping a job, attend colleges and to lead as full and independent lives as they wish. 

We also have a community inclusion team who provide opportunities for people to access a wide range of activities and facilities around Leeds. Recently HFT have started supporting a group of students with learning disabilities in a halls of residence, from here they attend a range of learning and activities. 

At the moment we support people in a range of paid and unpaid work – this ranges from working in hospitality services, gardening roles to working in the service sector.  

Recently HFT have helped individuals set up 3 social enterprises – Café Bella, a coffee van that tours festivals and fairs – a printer cartridge re-cycling initiative and most recently we are helping people set up their own theatre company in association with ‘Shatterproof Theatre Company’. 

All staff are well trained and supported and work to very clear goals and job descriptions and individuals are encouraged to appoint the right staff team to work for them. 

HFT puts the people they support first and they must be at the forefront of all aspects of their lives.
