Supporting People with Learning Disabilities

HFT Cornwall

HFT provides a network of services for people with a learning disability with a range of needs.  This includes accommodation and day services in two houses in Wadebridge, each for eight people and two houses in St.Teath, each for five people, and three houses in St.Austell for seven, six and four respectively.

People

The accommodation and staffing meets a wide range of needs from those who can live relatively independently with minimum support to those who require intensive levels of care and support from staff. 

Accommodation

Roslyn is a large detached house situated at the end of the pedestrianised centre of Wadebridge. It provides a range of single room accommodation on the ground and first floors. It is situated immediately beside the Day Centre. Armadale is a large semi-detached house also providing a range of single room accommodation for eight people and situated in the centre of Wadebridge alongside a wide range of community facilities, approximately five minutes walk from the Day Centre. Valley View and Rendle House are specialist services at St Teath, each for five people who have Autism and intensive support needs. Valley View is a large converted farmhouse; Rendle House is purpose built within the grounds. There is an annex for day services. The houses are set on the outskirts of the large village of St Teath, seven miles north of Wadebridge. There are extensive grounds with plenty of wide open space with views over the Cornish countryside. Trelowen, Trelawney and Trevean are three house situated in the large town of St. Austell and within a wide range of community facilities. All three houses provide single accommodation for seven, six and four residents respectively.

Day Services
The Resource Centre is purpose built and situated behind Roslyn House.  It provides a base from which day services are co-ordinated and planned for both residents and non-residents.  Some day services are also offered from Valley View in St Teath. A range of activities is offered to accommodate a vast array of interests including art, craft and pottery, drama, cookery, yoga, computers, gardening. In addition, there is a determination to access services in the community such as horse riding, cycling, rambling, swimming, hydrotherapy and all the opportunities associated with local leisure and activity centres.

Education
Service users are currently engaged in a number of college placements including evening classes and activities. Links with St Austell College have provided college staff input to the day centre for one day a week.

Employment Support
Employment and work experience opportunities are sought for those who are able to participate. These opportunities are found both within the service and the local community.

Supported Living
Housing and support are provided for people in Wadebridge and Bude who require lower levels of staff support.  Each of the houses accommodates four tenants. There are a further two supported living services, one in Liskeard supporting two people with Prada Willi syndrome and one in St.Austell supporting two young adults in transition into adult services. The scope of the Supported Living services has developed into Domiciliary Care services for people who have moved on into their own homes.

Short Term Breaks
Chy Keres is a purpose built six bed service near Launceston that provides short term breaks and restbite to over 50 Service Users and their families living in east Cornwall.
