Hft | About us | News and updates | Volunteers' Week 2018

This Volunteers’ Week, we’d like to say a huge thank you to all of the volunteers who help us make a difference every day.

Volunteers are essential in helping to enhance the lives of the people we support and in helping us to deliver support in a truly person-centred way. Their enthusiasm and commitment is hugely appreciated and indispensable!

We’re lucky enough to have 350 volunteers registered, who enrich the lives of those we support, contributing a total of 8,350 volunteering hours over a single year. Their time and effort helps to tackle loneliness and isolation for people with learning disabilities every single day.

Volunteers come from all walks of life – this Volunteers’ Week, we’re sharing what some of ours think of volunteering at Hft…

Debbie

How long have you volunteered with Hft?

I have volunteered since August 2017. I cover the whole of the South West, helping to find volunteers to be buddies for the people we support.

What’s the best thing about volunteering for Hft?

I love feeling that I can give the people we support an opportunity to participate in activities that they are unable to do at present due to funding. It is great to Skype with the people we support and hear about how much they enjoy meeting new people.

What would you say to someone who was considering volunteering at Hft?

Definitely volunteer! The support and satisfaction you get is worth everything. No matter how little or great the amount of time you can offer, it is definitely worth it.

Julia

How long have you been a volunteer?

I’ve been volunteering with Luv2meetU, Hft’s dating and friendship service, since April  2012.

What’s the best thing about volunteering for Hft?

It’s really rewarding to get to know people and see them grow over time. It’s also really nice to know that you’re giving back to the world, and supporting others to enjoy their lives and make friends.

What would you say to someone who was considering volunteering at Hft?

The Luv2meetU team have been fantastic. I have grown a lot as a person through volunteering with them. There are lots of things I have learnt – both about others and myself. Volunteering is a great opportunity to get out into the world and do your bit to make it a better place. I would recommend it to anyone!

I’ve been volunteering since March 2018

What’s the best thing about volunteering for Hft?

The best thing so far has been taking people that Hft support to the Sealife centre. Seeing the genuine excitement that they were experiencing in something new to them was great, and really rewarding

What would you say to someone who was considering volunteering at Hft?

It is a worthwhile experience that will add value not just to your own life, but to the lives of people with learning disabilities.

Give it a go. It’s very rewarding.

Will

How long have you been a volunteer?

I have been a Luv2meetU volunteer for 10 years, when it was formerly known as Stars in the Sky Yorkshire.

What sort of work do you do with Hft?

As a volunteer with Luv2meetU, I usually run an event every month.  Events vary from day trips, to activity based such as ten pin bowling, to meals out.

Many members have been with Luv2meetU during the 10 years I have been a volunteer.  I have enjoyed seeing members’ confidence and independence develop and new friendships grow.

What has been the most valuable part of your volunteering experience?

The most valuable part of my volunteering experience is being entrusted to run events independently. I also like building up trust and rapport with members.
