Mentor

We need volunteers to assist people with learning disabilities to do the things they enjoy in their community– whether it’s bowling, swimming, crafting, finding new hobbies, baking, playing board games, singing, dancing, watching sports or going out for a coffee or to the cinema.

There is no typical day as everyone is a unique person with different needs of support.

Duties may include:

  • Building a trusting relationship with your mentee, working towards achieving their goals.
  • To assist people to develop basic life skills to help someone become more independent
  • Supporting people to attend health and wellbeing appointments.
  • Walking alongside people, listening, guiding, and offering solutions and choices.
  • Introducing people to new social activities and peer networking.
  • Either lone working with people, joint working with another team member or working to support people in group activities.
  • Opportunities to facilitate group activities, be creative and use your skills to engage people to join.
  • Providing company and conversation, improving people mental health
  • Attending monthly support sessions with your line manager.
  • Recording your notes and hours after each session.

We are looking for people:

  • With a passion to help others.
  • Who are empathetic, patient and reliable.
  • Positive, committed, and non-judgmental.
  • Who are available for 4-6 hours a week for 4-6months minimum.
  • Confident and understanding of people challenging behaviours – full training given.

We offer a full training programme, via e-learning and on the job training and an induction plan after which you will get shadowing opportunities before you start.

We can also support your professional, social and personal development and help you to achieve your own volunteering goals. This is suitable for all ages, experience and skill levels.

Your support will give your mentee the opportunity to gain confidence, independence and skills – all while doing something you both enjoy.

You don’t need any qualifications or experience to be a volunteer mentor, just a kind and caring nature and some free time. We reimburse all out of pocket expenses.

Support Worker

We need volunteers to support people with learning disabilities who require a high level of care to live their life as independently as they can.

If you want a change of career, gain an accreditation, improve your employment chances consider becoming a volunteer support worker in a residential care home. Get a real taste of the day-to-day work in our services. Learn new skills and even work towards a professional qualification. You will shadow an HFT skilled support worker in their duties which may include:

  • Working towards goals identified in support plans
  • Building up a person’s life skills, e.g., teaching someone to cook, to manage a budget, to use public transport, to apply for job or volunteer somewhere.

Whether you need to complete a placement on a GAP year or you want to experience what it is like to work in this sector, we can accommodate you at one of our locations across the UK. We are also able to offer placement to DofE students and any student looking for work experience.

There is no typical day as everyone is a unique person with different needs of support.

Duties may include:

  • Supporting people in creative group activities
  • Shadowing a member of staff on their daily routines
  • Supporting the admin team
  • Speaking to people, building relationships. Other duties:
    • Watching films and television
    • Reading, looking at photographs, magazines, etc
    • Colouring /arts & crafts
    • Listening to music, singing and dancing
    • Games, jigsaws
    • Gardening

We are always looking for people to support our locations with a number of things on site. Ultimately your will be supporting people to connect to their outdoor living spaces.

  • Discussing with the people we support what they would like to grow
  • Weeding, preparing the soil for sowing and keeping the site weed free
  • Suggesting new ideas and involving the adults in the long-term planning and development of the site.
  • Supporting people to engage with nature and enjoy their living space
  • Trimming hedges to keep paths wheelchair accessible

We need volunteers to support people with learning disabilities who require transport to live their life as independently as they can.

There is no typical day as everyone is a unique person with different needs of support.

Duties may include:

  • Assist with gathering and delivering supplies on behalf of people with learning disabilities
  • Driving the people, we support and our other team members to appointments, shopping or to fun activities and see family members
  • Be on hand to help with other roles if needed, such as making and delivering activity boxes
  • Be a general helping hand to the front-line staff and the people we support.

We are looking for people:

  • With a passion to help others.
  • Who are empathetic, patient and reliable.
  • Positive, committed, and non-judgmental.
  • Who are available for 4-6 hours a week for 4-6months minimum.
