Back of the net! World Cup football fever hits Hft

The Buzz Inn has been turned into a footy palace to watch games

Football fever has hit Hft!

With the World Cup underway, the people we support have been glued to the telly, roaring at every goal, groaning at every miss and living each match like it’s the final.

At 117 Hitchin Road, the service’s onsite pub – The Buzz Inn – has been turned into a footie palace.

The pub, in the garden, has been decorated in England flags and bunting with each match being shown in true British style with the people we support wearing their England shirts to cheer The Three Lions to victory.

Service Manager Claire Davis-Sond said: “All of the people we support are huge football fans so the World Cup is a big thing for them.

“Everyone is in the World Cup spirit and the atmosphere at The Buzz Inn is fantastic. It’s a great place for everyone to come together and watch the match.”

Alongside screening the matches, the service is also running its own football tournament, hosted by Sam. Sam – who wants to be a sports coach- set up Sports Club which runs every Monday afternoon.

During the World Cup the focus has been on football skills, with each of the people who draw on the support of the service competing against each other to put the ball in the back of the net in a goal scoring competition.

The winner will be crowed at the finale of the world cup on July 19.

Sam, who is one of 10 learning disabled adults who live at Hitchin Road, said: “I really enjoy our football sessions, especially showing others how to score goals.

“The World Cup is about enjoying the best football teams and seeing England progress.

“I love football and the tournament means a lot to me.”

Everyone who lives at Hitchin Road has a job – and Christopher is the manager of The Buzz Inn.

And he’s already made a promise to his ‘regulars’ should England reign victorious in the tournament.

Claire added: “The Buzz Inn will be packed if England reach the final and according to Christopher, our pub manager, all drinks are free for that match.”
