“More than support: How Tom and Paul built a friendship that transforms lives”

Tom and Paul have a great relationship

Because Tom is not only Paul’s support worker, he is also his friend

Tom, 37, became key worker for Paul when he joined Hft in the summer of 2021 at its supported living service in Bristol.

Previously Tom had worked in retail and was looking for a new challenge when a friend of his shared with him how rewarding she found her role as a support worker.

“I could see how much she got out of it,” said Tom.

“She really enjoyed being able to support people to live their lives to the full.”

Tom joined the team at Apsley House and is key worker to Paul and Alan.

His job is varied, from making sure both attend appointments to helping with the weekly food shop and getting out and about and enjoying activities.

Tom also works closely with Paul’s family to liaise about his support needs, having built a trusted relationship with them over the years.

“Being a support worker, every day is different,” said Tom.

“Obviously there’s the life admin things which everyone needs to do.

“But one of the most important things about being a keyworker is the relationship you build with the person you support.

“They need to trust you and know you are their friend. It’s about being a constant presence in their lives.

“It’s also about building confidence in them and encouraging them to go out and try new things and take themselves out of their comfort zone.

“It can be as simple as helping them learn how to book a taxi independently.

“It’s often these little things which are infact the big things. And we celebrate those wins together.”

A trip Paul always enjoys with Tom is the weekly visit to the café for a bite to eat after completing his weekly food shop.

“Tom is great in helping me with my shopping,” said Paul.

“And we work together on a healthy eating plan to ensure I stay in good shape,” he smiles.

Tom and Paul also enjoy weekly visits to the local gym where Paul works out. Paul also enjoys swimming.

“I am just there to support and advise,” said Tom.

“Paul was keen to improve his fitness so it’s about me helping him to choose the most appropriate equipment and support him in using it.

“It’s a lot about building confidence.

“I hope my support of him has helped improve his confidence and in turn, increased his feeling of independence.”

The pair also share many laughs together

“Paul has a great sense of humour and we are always laughing about something or other,” said Tom.

Paul admits that Tom makes him laugh

“Finding the right support worker who you can get along with, have a laugh with and enjoy life with is very important,” said Paul.

“Tom is a friend, a confidante. He knows what is important to me, such as my family.

“I trust him and feel happy to share my feelings with him. Even when I am feeling sad or frustrated.”

The pair are also looking forward to Christmas at Apsley House.

“We have a tradition where Tom and I go and get all the festive food for the house,” said Paul.

“This includes all the ingredients for Christmas lunch and Boxing Day lunch. And then we help to cook the meal.

“I like living at Apsley House. I feel that by getting the support I need, I can then go on and support others who live here too.”

Tom said anyone looking for a rewarding career, where every day is different, should consider a role in social care.

“It’s a great career,” said Tom

“And one where you know that every day your hard work is really making a difference to someone’s life.”
