Hft joins the Big Help Out in Bristol

To mark King Charles’ Coronation, staff from learning disability charity Hft volunteered at a local supported living service, putting their painting and DIY skills to the test to help residents and staff.

On Tuesday 9 May, staff from the charity’s Commercial Housing team headed to Apsley House, a supported living service in Bristol, as part of the national volunteering event. The team supported with a number of tasks and worked through the service’s to-do list, from painting the dining room and filling and repairing walls to installing handy storage units for residents and carrying out general repairs.

                       Painting is underway!

The team then got the barbecue up and running for residents and fellow colleagues to continue the Coronation celebrations.

The Big Help Out, founded by the Shaping the Future with Volunteering Group, saw over six million people give up their time through volunteering, including the Prince and Princess of Wales, with over 55,000 events scheduled to take place around the UK.

Reflecting on the day, Eden Bailey, Acting Head of Commercial Housing at Hft, says, “Hft’s Housing team really came together to lend a hand and experience just how rewarding volunteering can be, as part of the Big Help Out, and the power it has to make a change.

“It was also lovely to spend some time together as a team and enjoy a spot of barbecue!”

Jade Odell, Senior Housing Officer, adds, “It was a great team day, volunteering to help at a service and get everyone involved. Decorating, building a barbecue, gardening and then eating!”

There are now calls for the Big Help Out to become an annual event, and organisations are encouraging people to sign up for other upcoming volunteering opportunities such as Volunteers’ Week (1 – 7 June).

About Hft

Proudly established in 1962 by a group of visionary parents, Hft is a charity supporting more than 2,500 learning disabled adults in England and Wales. Together, we are creating a future where learning disabled people and their families can live the best life possible.

Providing personalised support. Creating solutions for living independently. Coming together to campaign for positive change. Fundraising for new opportunities and a bigger impact.

In 2033, we’ll live in a world where learning disabled people have greater choice. About where they live. The support they need and want. And how to spend their time and money.

Learning disability versus difficulty

A learning disability is different from a learning difficulty but the terms are often confused and used inter-changeably. A learning difficulty does not affect general intellect, whereas a learning disability is a life-long condition characterised by a reduced intellectual ability and struggle with everyday activities.
