An Hft service in Moreton-in-Marsh has been shortlisted for a prestigious Great British Care Award.
Gloucestershire Domiciliary Care Agency is hoping to win the Putting People First award in the West Midlands region for its consistently impressive and high quality person-centred support. The Great British Care Award recognises innovation in personalisation, commending teams who empower people to have more control over the support they need.
The Hft service, which offers supported living accommodation and a drop-in centre in the heart of the community, was rated as Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in 2017, placing it in the top two percent of adult social care services inspected.
Described as ‘exceptionally caring’ and ‘extremely responsive’ by inspectors, the service prides itself on empowering adults with learning disabilities and encouraging them to live independently. Support workers create personalised plans allowing people to achieve individual milestones, as well as helping individuals pursue lifelong ambitions.
The Great British Care Awards are a series of regional events throughout England celebrating excellence across the care sector. The purpose of the awards is to pay tribute to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding excellence within their field of work.

Registered Cluster Manager Judy Johnson (supported by Senior Support Worker Denise Mumford) recently attended a regional judging day where Judy was interviewed about the service and her experiences. They’re now looking forward to the award presentation in Birmingham later this month, where winners will be announced.

Person-centred support is at the heart of everything we do at Hft so it’s lovely to feature in a category that celebrates personalisation and putting people first. Our brilliant team of support workers work really hard to ensure that people we support have the opportunity to live the best life possible – it would be a fantastic achievement for everyone at our service to win this award.”
Hft currently supports more than 2,500 people with learning disabilities across the country. This includes supporting people with learning disabilities to live independently in their own homes, providing employment services to help people develop skills and experience for work and helping people to pursue hobbies, make new friends and get involved in their local communities.

Learning disability versus difficulty
A learning disability is different from a learning difficulty but the terms are often confused and used inter-changeably. A learning difficulty does not affect general intellect, whereas a learning disability is a life-long condition characterised by a reduced intellectual ability and struggle with everyday activities.
