After leaving the disability community for over a week without a dedicated Minister of State, it’s shocking that the Government has chosen to downgrade this role.

Responding to the appointment of a new disability minister, Devia Gurjar, Chief Charity and External Affairs Officer at learning disability charity Hft, said that, from a dedicated position held by a Minister of State, it is now a part-time responsibility held by the Parliamentary Under-secretary of State for Safeguarding.

“That is not right,” she adds. “As highlighted in our mandate campaign, Voices for Our Future, there are numerous issues impacting learning disabled adults which need the attention of Government, from social care to employment. And we know this list is by no means exhaustive.

“We simply cannot see how Mims Davies will be able to juggle the responsibility of her current responsibilities as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State alongside this.

“Ultimately, this sends a message that the needs of disabled people simply aren’t a priority. The Government must urgently reinstate a minister who’s dedicated and whose sole responsibility is for disabled people.”

About Hft

Proudly established in 1962 by a group of visionary parents, Hft is a charity supporting more than 2,500 learning disabled adults in England and Wales. Together, we are creating a future where learning disabled people and their families can live the best life possible.

Providing personalised support. Creating solutions for living independently. Coming together to campaign for positive change. Fundraising for new opportunities and a bigger impact.

In 2033, we’ll live in a world where learning disabled people have greater choice. About where they live. The support they need and want. And how to spend their time and money.

Learning disability versus difficulty

A learning disability is different from a learning difficulty but the terms are often confused and used inter-changeably. A learning difficulty does not affect general intellect, whereas a learning disability is a life-long condition characterised by a reduced intellectual ability and struggle with everyday activities.
