Christmas is well and truly on the way for Chelmsford locals, who are being invited to spread some seasonal goodwill at national learning disability charity Hft’s first Christmas concert in the city.

Held at Chelmsford Cathedral on 16 December, the Coming of Christmas concert promises to get the whole family in the Christmas spirit, with carols, readings and music performed by Chelmsford Cathedral choral scholars and support from The Chelmsford Singers. The afternoon aims to get the whole community feeling festive, with the former Bishop of Chelmsford John Waine and the Mayor of Chelmsford already confirmed to be attending.

Doors open at 1.30pm and the concert begins at 2pm. As well as taking in the entertainment, guests will also have the chance to enjoy complimentary mulled wine and mince pies, with the event officially finishing by 4pm.

All proceeds from the festive event are set to go towards a new specialist autism service, designed to meet the needs of young adults with complex needs and on the autistic spectrum who are moving out of assessment and treatment centres to more independent living in the community.

Honora Smith, Divisional Fundraising Manager at Hft, said:

“We’re hoping for a great turn out at this fantastic Christmas event. It’s a wonderful chance to get together with family and friends for a magical afternoon, while raising money for a vital cause.

“All the money raised will help us to support adults with learning disabilities to live the best life possible. Our services range from round the clock support to helping people with specific challenges such as building a social life or developing skills for independent living.”

Hft supports adults with learning disabilities, providing person-centred services ranging from flexible day support to supported living at home – from a few hours a week to 24 hours a day.

Tickets cost £10 and are available from www.hft.org.uk/comingofchristmaschelmsford

About Hft

Proudly established in 1962 by a group of visionary parents, Hft is a charity supporting more than 2,500 learning disabled adults in England and Wales. Together, we are creating a future where learning disabled people and their families can live the best life possible.

Providing personalised support. Creating solutions for living independently. Coming together to campaign for positive change. Fundraising for new opportunities and a bigger impact.

In 2033, we’ll live in a world where learning disabled people have greater choice. About where they live. The support they need and want. And how to spend their time and money.

Learning disability versus difficulty

A learning disability is different from a learning difficulty but the terms are often confused and used inter-changeably. A learning difficulty does not affect general intellect, whereas a learning disability is a life-long condition characterised by a reduced intellectual ability and struggle with everyday activities.
