A learning disabilities service in Bidford on Avon is hoping for sunshine as it opens its doors for a summer fete.

Run by Hft, a national charity supporting adults with learning disabilities, the local service aims to raise vital funds and encourage local adults with learning disabilities to feel part of their community. Money raised from the fete is expected to go towards new resources including sensory equipment and redecoration.

Held at Hft’s rural service in Bidford, the event promises fun for all the family, including entertainment from a local music group and face painting, as well as a raffle with some great prizes from local businesses up for grabs. Hot food and other refreshments will be on sale.

Following a successful open day last summer, the fete also offers the chance for members of the public to find out more about the work the charity does supporting adults with learning disabilities to live the best life possible.

The Bidford on Avon Resource Centre, which is run by Hft, a national charity supporting people with learning disabilities, currently supports around 50 people with various needs. Locally it offers person-centred services ranging from flexible day support to supported living at home – from a few hours a week to 24 hours a day. The emphasis is on creatively supporting people to live with greater levels of independence and personal fulfilment.

Jenny Fawke, Flexible Support Development Manager at Hft, said: “Our summer fete is set to be a fantastic day raising money for a great cause. As well as a wide range of fun activities including tombolas and ‘welly wanging’, the fete also offers the valuable opportunity to visit our amazing centre and see the difference Hft makes to the lives of adults with learning disabilities. We hope to see lots of the community there!”

Hft Bidford on Avon’s summer fete is free and open to everyone. It takes place on 11 August at 7 Waterloo Road, Bidford from 1pm – 4pm.

Learning disability versus difficulty

A learning disability is different from a learning difficulty but the terms are often confused and used inter-changeably. A learning difficulty does not affect general intellect, whereas a learning disability is a life-long condition characterised by a reduced intellectual ability and struggle with everyday activities.
