Eight dedicated support workers and a manager have raised hundreds of pounds for new equipment at a Kent-based Hft service by taking on the 100,000 step challenge.
The team of staff, who usually spend their days supporting people with learning disabilities to live the best life possible, gave up their own time to hike a scenic route along the coast to Dungeness, each aiming to tot up over 100,000 steps on their Fitbit to raise money to go towards a much-needed refresh for the garden at a local supported living service. The ‘outdoorsy’ residents love spending time outside but needed some new equipment to help them make the most of the space.
The early risers met at Folkestone at 5am and set off on their mission, even managing to catch a spectacular sunrise. It wasn’t long before they encountered their first obstacle – a narrow path with a steep drop. Luckily the group kept their balance and continued on their way, reaching Dungeness after six and a half hours of walking, and raising over £600.
Thanks to their support workers and generous sponsors, the service will be able to purchase new parasols and stands, a barbeque and some replacement picnic benches. Residents are already looking forward to hosting barbeques and get-togethers that the whole house can attend.
Reflecting on the group’s achievements, Senior Support Worker Grace Nicholls said:
“Trying to walk 100,000 steps in one day was certainly a challenge! Although it was exhausting, the day was filled with fun and laughter. We’re all really pleased with what we achieved and, most importantly, the people we support will be able to enjoy some leisure time in the garden once the weather warms up again.”
Locally, Hft provides person-centred services ranging from flexible day support to supported living at home – from a few hours a week to 24 hours a day.
