A service in Lympne run by Hft is hosting fun for all the family this April, in a bid to raise funds for major renovations.
The service, which supports adults with learning disabilities to live the best life possible, is inviting Lympne locals to a fashion show and Easter egg hunt. All money raised is set to go towards building work at the service, which will see the garden renovated to create a more stimulating and inviting environment.
Taking place on 12 April is the charity’s fashion show, run in partnership with fundraising fashion show organisation Colours. Fashion-conscious locals will have the chance to take their pick of ex-high street styles, including a range of trends and sizes to suit all ages. Two people supported at the learning disability service are particularly looking forward to the evening, as they’ll be joining the models on the catwalk!
As well as enjoying the show, shopping opportunities and a raffle, guests will receive a goodie bag and glass of bubbly on arrival.
For those who prefer chocolate to clothes, the service is holding its annual Easter Egg Hunt on 20 April. Visitors will be able to enjoy entertainment including a petting zoo, raffle, big bad wolf game, and even a visit from the Easter Bunny himself. Hungry parents can enjoy a barbeque and a hot chocolate, while children will be able to make their own bunny ears to wear as they scout out their chocolate eggs. Preparations for the spring afternoon are already underway, as people and staff at the service look forward to decorating the woods, helping with the barbeque and greeting guests.
Funds raised at the events are set to contribute to outdoor changes at the service. Plans are in place for a completely renovated garden, which promises to provide much-needed space for adults with learning disabilities to relax, socialise and exercise. Concrete paths will be laid so that the service’s outdoor gym can be accessed by everyone, and a summer house will be changed into a sensory room, providing a stimulating environment. Further building plans include work on the fish pond and tennis court.

“We’re delighted to have such a full calendar this April and are hoping to see lots of the community at our fashion show and egg hunt. Events like these are a great chance to get together with friends and family, all while raising funds that will help us support adults with learning disabilities to build their independence and enjoy new experiences.”
Hft supports more than 2,900 people with learning disabilities across the country. This includes supporting people with learning disabilities to live independently in their own homes, providing employment services to help people develop skills and experience for work and helping people to pursue hobbies, make new friends and get involved in their local communities.

Learning disability versus difficulty
A learning disability is different from a learning difficulty but the terms are often confused and used inter-changeably. A learning difficulty does not affect general intellect, whereas a learning disability is a life-long condition characterised by a reduced intellectual ability and struggle with everyday activities.
